  • Bad Designs and Broken Things

    // June 25th, 2008

    I was reading the book “Design of Everyday Things” for school and it pointed out all the bad designs in our everyday uses. After reading that book, I took things more critically. I observed door handles in public places and see the point – where exactly do you push sometimes? Why do you need to look for the door hinges for the clue about where it swung to open?

    Today, I came across a new fax machine. I thought fax machines were straight forward – type the number in and something magical happens. This one today was over complicated. Well, it could do everything – scan, copy, fax, and probably shine your shoe. I inserted the paper, right side up, like it showed me. Good so far. Then I typed the fax number in and press “Start”. Good so far.

    Our Dependencies

    // June 22nd, 2008

    It’s amazing how quickly we adapt and become dependent on things. It’s been 9 hours and I’m wondering what my life will be like in the next 3 weeks. In a way, it does feel like my life is starting all over again.

    Finished school, free time, new gym, new phone (3 weeks or so), and just a world of opportunities.  I’m not sure what’s more exciting than not knowing what’s ahead of you but it can be overwhelming at the same time.

    Bittersweet

    // June 22nd, 2008

    I’ve heard that time goes by so quickly because we think about how insignificant time is in our life. Have you ever noticed how you would mark a date on your calendar and before you know it, you have six appointments and 10 places that you need to be at.

    I’m going over the places that I wanted to show my mom and uncle and make sure that I didn’t miss anything. It takes a significant event for anyone to visit me, so I make it a point to make sure that everyone is entertained. But I’m sure there are things that fell through the cracks. Didn’t get to introduce tapas. Or Restaurant Alma… Both I haven’t done in a while, the latter in a couple of years.

    For what it is worth, I did take them to as many places that I could think about. At least once to most restaurants that I know of. Except twice for dim sum at the same place. Well, don’t have much dim sum choices here so I pick what I can.

    Bittersweet moment. As much as I don’t want to admit it, there a side of me that wishes that I wouldn’t be so far away. The reality is that I’m sure there’s something in the bigger picture that will be revealing itself soon. Or something out there for me to find.

    Identity

    // June 11th, 2008

    I was at the Museum of American Indian a few weeks ago and I remembered about the exhibition about Identity that was on display. Made me think about who I am. We go through world thinking we know who we are but do we really? Okay, that was intended for me. Who are we supposed to be? Who do we want to be? Who should we be?

    I do wonder what my next calling is, where I am intended to be, who I should become. Sometimes we take on the personalities of our parents. I find myself passionate and diverse like my father and sometimes conservative like my mother. Both good personalities. I hope I’ve defined a new personality for myself – finding my true calling faraway from home and moving forward as life takes me.
