Most of you might know me from being the “Photographer” but some might know me as the “Engineer”. Which am I? Honestly, I like both jobs just as much.
During the day, I am the engineer. Engineers by definition are people who like to solve problems by applying what we know. As you can imagine, we don’t like surprises. I am a Systems Engineer, by definition, which means I design the hardware and write the software for the hardware.
Education is important to me. I am currently pursuing my Masters of Science degree in Software Engineering at the University of Minnesota. If things go well, I will graduate in the Spring of 2008. I currently have a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. Realistically, there are multiple degrees that interest me but I only have so much time (and money) available to pursue what is most important to me.
To describe what I do, it will take some imagination. At work, writing (robust) software is an art form. Most people think it is theory and lines of unreadable words. Realistically, if the software is written correctly, it can be read, just like regular sentences. It takes interpretation, which by definition is art. I believe there’s always more than one way to solve a problem. There’s also more than one way to imagine a solution.
I like picking out large hardware components to go with the project. It makes it fun to be able to determine how the hardware will solve the problem. Ultimately, engineers solve problems.
My areas of expertise include motion control, robotics, vision systems, software design, debugging, and data acquisition. I am also the Systems Administrator/Analyst for my company’s network. I designed and maintained the network, phone and servers for an office of about 40 users.
Some people ask me what I don’t do. Well… I don’t know. If it makes me curious enough, I’ll figure it out, one way or another. I am naturally curious about a lot of things. The thing that most interests me is building something new. I like to get things off the ground for the first time.
